Published this week, the 2010 Retirement Confidence Survey, EBRI's 20th annual version of this poll, finds that a majority [of U.S. residents] -- 54% -- have less than $25,000 in total savings and investments (not including their primary residence) [saved for retirement], and 27% have less than $1,000.

I recall about ten years ago there was the warning that 50% of Americans aged 50 and older had less than $50,000 (not including real estate) saved for retirement. The situation obviously hasn't improved.
